About Me
Hi there! I’m Brett Nielsen, and I’m running for Utah House District 51.
I grew up in rural Idaho in a conservative, faith-centered community. I was a proud Republican, and those experiences shaped the values I still carry today like hard work, personal responsibility, respect for others, and serving each other.
I came to Utah for greater opportunity, and this community has given me that and more. It’s become my home.
Today, I’m running as a centrist Democrat not because my values changed, but because I don’t feel like I fully belonged to one party. I’ve met many people who feel the same way.

WHAT I’M RUNNING ON

People deserve a government they can trust.
That means transparency, honesty, and elected officials who answer to the people, not to corporations or insiders. Government should stay focused on what matters most, reduce unnecessary overreach, and work efficiently to solve real problems.
Accountability also means taking responsibility for the issues that affect our daily lives, such as protecting air quality, preserving natural resources, and safeguarding children from harmful technologies like AI and social media.

Money doesn’t go as far as it used to. I’ve talked with friends and neighbors who are working hard but still struggling, some skipping meals between paychecks, others feeling like homeownership is out of reach.
We need to lower the cost of living and expand opportunity by increasing housing availability responsibly, providing tax relief for everyday people, and supporting farmers and current residents so they can stay on their land. Growth should create opportunity, not push people out.

Utah’s strength comes from the people who work hard every day to support their families.
Here in House District 51, we’re one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. That growth brings opportunity, but also real pressure on working families.
Too many people feel like they’re falling behind, working harder without getting ahead.
We need to invest in what helps people succeed:
Infrastructure and transportation that connect people to opportunity
Education and workforce development for long-term success
Support for small businesses and local economies
Access to reliable healthcare and community services
Growth should create opportunity, not strain the people who already live here.
With thoughtful planning, we can build a future where working families can thrive.
WHY I’M RUNNING
I’m running because I believe government should work for the people it represents. I came to Utah looking for greater opportunity, and this community gave me that. Now I want to give back.
I’m running to help build a future where people can afford to live, where government can be trusted, and where working people have real opportunity to succeed. This isn’t about left or right; it’s about listening, bringing people together, and making sure our community continues to grow in a way that works for everyone.
